100 Winning Progressives in Dutchess County, 20th C.D.-- join us!...

Hi all...

I was informed last night that Dem chairs for ten counties in 20th Congressional District have picked someone else to be the nominee this year...

But thanx big-time to all 110 of you out there (see below) who endorsed my campaign--much appreciated!...

Including the following:

-- Conor Boylan (Progressive Democrats of America Field Director)
-- Barbara Kraft and Keven Rheden (Rhinebeck Village Boardmembers)
-- Alyssa Kogon (Town of Clinton Democratic
-- Mark Dunlea (Hunger Action Network of NYS Executive Director)
-- Joe Seeman (Capital District Democratic Alliance)

[originally I stepped up to plate on this last Friday when it seemed after listening for hours and hours to WAMC that no other Dem was stepping forward, and after a number of you called and emailed me suggesting that I do this]

Now-- let's pull behind the Dem nominee (soon to be publicly announced-- and stop Jim Tedisco from being our representative in the House of Representatives!...

Just as important-- let's not let our coming together over the past week to support a progressive campaign for D. #20 be an end-- but just a beginning!...

Now let's make sure we keep in communication with one another-- and keep building a winning progressive network and movement in our area stronger and stronger!...

Thus the birth of this new blog...

[soon to be supported by a new listserv; stay tuned for details!...(will be launched this weekend)]

And-- we hope to work with folks like Conor Boylan and Tim Carpenter of Progressive Democrats of America (PDAmerica.org) to rejuvenate a local chapter here for the 20th C.D.!...(have had a number of communications with both already this week; Tim C. will also be our special guest for an extended interview on our "Real Majority Project" show on WVKR 91.3 FM Fri. Feb. 20th from 5-6 pm; tune in)...

[regular potlucks to start soon to build more support for 100 Winning Progressives in our area-- and Progressive Democrats of America; stay tuned for more details!]

Note as well-- you're all still very much invited-- Rhinebeck's Mike Nickerson is hosting a "Super Joel Party" this Sunday (Feb. 1st) 3-6 pm at his Black Swan Pub on 66 Broadway in Tivoli with refreshments and music before game starts!...(he came up with name for this event, k?)...find event on Facebook by searching "Super Joel Party" http://local.yahoo.com/info-11588328-black-swan-pub-tivoli -- you can also contact Mike directly on this at 757-3777 or micknick21@hotmail.com...

[...any $$$ raised Sunday will be given directly to Dem nominated to run for 20th c.d. against Tedisco...]

So again-- thanks again so much to all of you who came forward to support me over the past week-- but our work has only just begun!...

[as the late great Karen Carpenter used to say]

Let's make 100 Winning Progressives a real, working, network!...

[pass it on]

Host of "Real Majority Project" Fridays 5-6 pm on WVKR.org 91.3 FM
Host of "Common Sense" Saturdays 8-10 am on WHVW 950 AM

[We can do this; if I can win election in 2003 in what for decades used to be conservative G.O.P. bastions in Rhinebeck and Clinton to our County Legislature-- and if I can win re-election in '05 and '07 with more votes than any other Dem in our County Legislature-- while still staying true to progressive principles-- then it IS possible for 100 Winning Progressives to send many more progressive Dems into office at all levels!...(trust me!...but I can't do it alone-- let's pull together, folks!).]

Again-- no time to let up now, folks-- let's work like the dickens to stop Jim Tedisco from winning this seat-- and let's keep the 20th C.D. blue for you and me!...

We still need someone to represent us in Washington who would be a congressional representative in the mold of Rep.'s Maurice Hinchey and Dennis Kucinich and Sen.'s Bernie Sanders, Russ Feingold, and the late great Paul Wellstone.
[see http://www.house.gov/hinchey/ ; http://kucinich.house.gov/ ; http://sanders.senate.gov/ ]

We still need someone to represent us in Washington who would be a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus along with Rep. John Hall and Rep. Maurice Hinchey, the single largest partisan caucus in the House of Representatives, representing about a third of the House Democratic Caucus with 71 members.

See http://cpc.grijalva.house.gov/ -- the Congressional Progressive Caucus advocates "universal access to affordable, high quality health care," fair trade agreements, living wage laws, the right of all workers to organize into labor unions and engage in strike actions and collective bargaining, the abolition of significant portions of the USA PATRIOT Act, the legalization of same-sex marriage, strict campaign finance reform laws, a complete pullout from the war in Iraq, a crackdown on free trade and corporate welfare, an increase in income tax on the wealthy, tax cuts for the poor, and an increase in social welfare spending by the federal government. Many national progressive organizations works to support the efforts of the caucus, including the Institute for Policy Studies, The Nation magazine, MoveOn.org, National Priorities Project, Jobs with Justice, Peace Action, Americans for Democratic Action, Progressive Democrats of America, NAACP, ACLU, Progressive Majority, League of United Latin American Citizens, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, National Council of La Raza, Human Rights Campaign, Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs, et. al.

[Here in Dutchess County the following towns are in the 20th Congressional District: Amenia, Clinton, Hyde Park, LaGrange, Milan, North East, Pine Plains, Pleasant Valley, Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Stanford, Union Vale, Washington, and districts 3, 5, 7, and 8 of the 3rd Ward and districts 2, 6, and 7 in the 4th Ward in the Town of Poughkeepsie-- and the other counties in the district are Columbia, Delaware, Essex, Greene, Otsego, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Warren, and Washington counties.]

Here are twelve things we still need to pull together to work hard for now, more than ever, to send a strong message from the grass roots to Congress:

1. Truly restore integrity, real regulation to our financial markets (bring back FDR's Glass-Steagall Act)
[see http://www.PetitionOnline.com/FDRagain ]

2. $3.4 trillion spent in last 2 years on bailouts; what about small businesses and keeping us in homes?
[see http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2009/01/trillion-and-counting.html ]

3. End corporate welfare completely-- use savings to help small businesses, true engine of economy
[see http://www.petitiononline.com/statewar ;
http://www.thenation.com/doc/20090105/prins?rel=hp_currently ;
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/06/opinion/06chernow.html?_r=1 ]

4. True tax fairness (middle class now literally pays twice what millionaires pay in state and local taxes)
[see http://www.CTJ.org ; http://www.FiscalPolicy.org ]

5. Small business creates 90% of new jobs; 98% of small business owners make < than $250,000/year
[ http://www.inc.com/news/articles/200708/data.html ; http://mediamatters.org/items/200810180003 ]

6. No delay on loans for solar/geothermal energy efficiency retrofits for all homeowners/businesses
[see http://www.PetitionOnline.com/SOLAR ; http://www.CambridgeEnergyAlliance.org ]

7. Single-payer health care-- save $350 billion (Rep. Hinchey/Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation)
[see http://www.PNHP.org ]

8. $10/hour minimum wage to take inflation into account since '68 (real value: should now be $10/hour)
[see http://www.LetJusticeRoll.org ]

9. Protect our air, water, and bodies from toxins; save open space-- and ban chemical poisons.
[ http://www.BreastCancerOptions.org ; http://www.EWG.org ; http://www.PetitionOnline.com/SaveLand ]

10. Bring our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan asap; even-handed diplomacy in the Middle East.
[see http://www.UnitedforPeace.org/YesWeCan ; http://www.Tikkun.org ; http://www.Gush-Shalom.org ]

11. Stand up for human rights; legalize same-sex marriage, save money with real criminal justice reform
[see http://www.PrideAgenda.org ; http://www.PetitionOnline.com/ATIs ]

12. Empower a special prosecutor to investigate and prosecute federal officials for possible war crimes.

Folks below who signed on to http://www.PetitionOnline.com/Joel -- thanx again a ton to ALL of you out there who endorsed me for this race!...

[again-- now let's keep in communication with one another-- and keep building a winning progressive network and movement in our area stronger and stronger!]
